A South Essex College apprentice who works at the Cliffs Pavilion, in Southend, has used her experience with the theatre company to secure a full-time job.

Kim Davey, 20, studies for a Level 3 Community Arts Apprenticeship with Southend Theatres.

She works in the community and education department on outreach projects such as youth theatre groups and school tours.

Once she completes her apprenticeship next year, she has been offered a position backstage at the theatre.

Kim said: “I thought this apprenticeship would be a good gateway into the theatre industry.

“It’s definitely helped me get this permanent position. I’ve worked with so many different departments during my time here, I love that every day is different.”

She added: “I would 100 per cent recommend apprenticeships to others. You get so much more hands-on experience and learn practical skills for the workplace.”

Kim has definitely made her mark at the Cliffs Pavilion by trying to get involved in every aspect of the business to increase her work experience.

Kelly Reynolds, community and education manager, said: “Kim’s enthusiasm and positivity have ensured that she has progressed very quickly and is now a valued and integral part of the team.

“Kim is extremely reliable and flexible and shows great commitment to creative learning. She really understands the benefits of cultural experiences and lifelong learning within the arts.”

South Essex College has a wide range of apprenticeship schemes on offer, from accountancy to hospitality services and business admin to team leading.

It is holding an open day at its Southend campus in Luker Road, today, November 17, between 5pm and 8pm. It aims to give an idea of what it is like to study at the college and to see the teaching rooms, facilities and equipment first-hand.
