SPECIAL compostable bags are being handed out to Co-op customers in Brentwood.
Stores run by the company in Hutton, Shenfield, Pilgrims Hatch and the Baytree Centre will be giving out the carrier bags which cost 6p and can be used as a bin liner.
Once filled, they can then be turned into compost along with the rubbish inside.
Danny Howarth, the Co-operative food’s regional operations manager in Brentwood, said: "Every compostable carrier bag used is one less conventional plastic shopping bag in circulation.
"We believe they will have a significant impact upon the number of plastic bags which end up in landfill sites every year."
