A SECOND World War veteran who was involved in a famous military operation has met a group of 14 pub regulars who will walk 75 miles for charity.

David Whiteman, 94, from Laindon, visited the team from the Bricklayers Arms in Stondon Massey who on September 15 will go marching as they look to recreate a walk done by soliders as part of Operation Market Garden.

In September 1944, paratroopers from the Allied Forces were sent in behind enemy lines in the Netherlands and Belgium in a bid to try and capture nine bridges acting as vital transport routes for the Nazis.

Over the five days, which fall on the 70th anniversary of the operation, the walkers will go over all bridges involved with money being raised for Help for Heroes and The Parachute Regiment charity.

Mr Whiteman who was part of the Light Regiment Royal Artillery ahead of the battle said when he found out about the charity marchers, he felt the need to meet them.

He said: "I was delighted to meet the men who are going to be doing the route march for Operation Market Garden and believe me they are dedicated and will give 100 per cent."
