TWO Tory supporters told how they came across a “comatosed” woman having a diabetic attack in her own home while on the campaign trail.

Conservative candidate Paul Barrell and fellow supporter, retired doctor Gordon Maclellan, knocked on a door in Talbrook, Brentwood, when the drama unfolded.

The woman, in his 70s, was on the floor being attended to by her worried daughter.

She had already called an ambulance, but the pair was able to provide support to the woman and her daughter.

The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics, who soon arrived at the house.

Mr Maclellan, 68, a retired orthopaedic surgeon and former councillor, said it was a lucky turn of events.

He said: “Us being there was very serendipitous. The daughter had only just arrived a few minutes before we knocked and said she found her mum lying on the floor.

“It wasn’t good. If the daughter was a few minutes later who knows what might have happened.

“She was under terrible stress, but in the end she probably saved her mum’s life. We were just able to provide support and assurance.

“It was a great example of the kind of support a family can give.”

An ambulance spokesperson confirmed the incident, saying: “We received a call from the address about a woman who was unwell at about 2.35pm on Friday, May 16. An ambulance was sent to the scene.”

The woman is now believed to be recovering at home.
