About 1,400 women gathered together to show cancer who is boss in this year's Brentwood Race for Life.

Weald Country Park was packed to the brim with brave women taking on 5km or 10km sponsored races, all to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Crowds of supporters waved and shouted words of encouragement as participants ran, jogged, walked or danced their way around the course.

Many of the women taking part wore back signs with messages of hope written on the back while others pinned photos or messages in memory of loved ones to their t-shirts.

As the women crossed the finish line they were cheered on and presented with their medals in honour of their achievement and their contribution to beating cancer.

Courtney Culverhouse, event manager for the Race for Life, said: "It was a brilliant day – full of emotion, courage, tears and laughter.

"We had around 1,400 ladies taking part and we’re hoping to raise an incredible £160,000 which will be spent on research into all 200 types of cancer.

"We’re urging all the women who took part – and all the friends, family and colleagues who pledged to sponsor them – to transform their passion into progress by returning the money they’ve raised as soon as possible.

"I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped to make the event happen – including Brentwood Park Run, Essex Land Rover Club, Brentwood Sea Cadets, Brentwood Air Cadets, Heart FM and all of our incredible volunteers!

"Well done to everyone who took part for doing something amazing and for helping us to beat cancer sooner."
