THOUSANDS of motorcycles will thunder into Harwich as part of the 17th annual Essex Air Ambulance Motorcycle Run this weekend.

More than 5,000 bikers are expected to set off from Ford Dunton Technical Centre, Laindon, Basildon, at 11am on Sunday before making their way to Harwich, where there will be a family festival on Harwich Green.

Motorcycle stunt team, Bolddog Freestyle Motocross will welcome bikers with a spectacular display of death-defying stunt displays before the ride and for Moto GP fans, four Dainese race suits will be on display as worn by Jorge Lorenzo, Stefan Bradl, Leon Haslam and Max Biaggi.

Hundreds of spectators are expected to cheer on the riders as they make their way along the 60-mile Essex Police-approved route to Harwich, where the family festival will include music from local bands, a charity auction and food and entertainment.

Bikers will be greeted by local dignitaries and Harwich mayor Pam Morrison as they cross the finish line.

The festival will take place on Harwich Green from 11am, with live music from Total 80s and Feel for Steel as well as Ipswich vocalist, Haz.

There are attractions for bikers and families alike throughout the day including motorcycle dealer stands as well as the Heart Angels, craft and community stands, a charity auction and children’s activities.

Food and refreshments are available from British Event Catering, where a donation is made directly to the air ambulance from every meal purchased.

The air ambulance will be based at the event and will give visitors the chance to see the aircraft up close and meet the crew.

Organiser Jen Wall, event organiser said: “It’s great news that more than 1,800 bikers have already signed up to take part in the ride – and we look set for an amazing turn-out on the day, typically we’re joined by over 5,000 bikers.

“A big thank you to our sponsors Woodland Group, Essex Police Outriders, Ford Motor Company, Harwich Connexions, Harwich Motorcycle Club, Essex GoldWings, Essex Police Motorcycle Unit, Essex Highways and Harwich Rugby Club, local business supporters and volunteers who all help to make the day run smoothly and safely.

“Last year’s event raised over £35,200 and we hope to build on that this year to help keep our life-saving helicopters flying and our HEMS team saving lives.

“Our message to bikers – we look forward to seeing you on the day and if you can get sponsored too it will really make a difference to our fundraising.”

The Harwich Green area will once again be closed to cars in order to allow for the presence of the bikes.
