THE number of potholes on main routes across the county has halved after it was revealed more than 800 drivers lodged claims against Essex County Council last year.
Essex County Council surfaced 3.24 million square metres of road this summer, and fixed 2,627 defects on the roads between July and at the end of September.
The amount of defects on A and B roads in the county dropped from 555 to 291, with the total number of potholes across the county falling from 4,954 to 4,597.
Highways boss Eddie Johnson (Con) said: “Following a record summer for road surfacing, we have seen an impressive reduction in the number of potholes across the county.
“This has been helped further thanks to the Government’s Pothole Action Fund allowing us to send out extra repair crews onto the county’s roads.”
Despite the improvements, figures from the RAC said 818 motorists had made claims against the council because of damage to their cars as a result of road defects in the last financial year.
A total of 81 claims paid out to a total of £24,516.
