A PETITION designed to thwart proposed changes to Broomfield A&E on Saturday received “extraordinary support”, a campaign group has said.

Campaigners from Chelmsford Momentum group, a left-wing grass roots organisation, on Saturday took to Chelmsford High Street in a fresh move to garner support for its Defend Our A&E campaign.

The group’s petition collected more than 700 signatures in an hour and a half, according to Andy Abbott, chairman of Chelmsford’s Momentum branch.

He said: “We had large queues of people signing throughout, crowding around the table.

“Most of us on the stall were fairly experienced in petitioning, and all of us said we had never seen anything like it. The response really was quite extraordinary.”

He added an online version was launched due to public demand.
