BRENTWOOD Borough Council is backing a campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse.

The international campaign, 16 Days of Action Against Domestic Violence, runs until Saturday December 10,Human Rights Day.

As part of the campaign the Council's Community Safety team will be running an awareness event with partners, Victim Support and Brentwood Neighbourhood Watch next week.

They will have an information and awareness stand on Friday December 2 from 9am until 1pm at the Chapel Ruins, High Street, Brentwood.

Brentwood Borough Council's Chair of the Community, Health and Leisure Committee, Councillor Keith Parker, said: "One in four women and one in six men experience abuse at home at some stage of their lives.

“There is no excuse for domestic abuse; it can have a devastating effect and consequences on the victim and the whole family. We want people to know that help is available.

The event on Thursday is aimed at raising awareness of this issue and to encourage sufferers to seek help."
