ESSEX Fire and Rescue Service is reminding the public to be safe when taking care of mums this Mother’s Day.

Residents are reminded to make sure their mum is safe from the risk of fire by checking smoke alarms.

Neil Fenwick, Head of Community Safety, said: “Mother’s Day is the perfect day to check that your mum feels safe and well in her home.

“A smoke alarm is one of the most important pieces of equipment in the home. It gives vital early warning at the first sign of a fire, waking you if a fire starts in the night and giving all in the house plenty of time to get out before they are overcome by the deadly smoke that fills their property.

"While you're thinking about your family consider all elderly relatives, friends and neighbours who may be vulnerable and make it your business to make sure they have the same level of protection in their homes."
