A CHELMSFORD theatre student is appearing alongside comedian Miranda Hart in a West End show.

Shani Roberts, 9, who is training at Tomorrow’s Talent theatre school is the production of Annie with the star.

Since her Performing Arts training at Chelmsford theatre school Tomorrow’s Talent, the youngster has performed in shows at the Civic Theatre, Chelmsford.

Shani auditioned for the West End revival of ANNIE earlier this year, and after several recalls was offered the role of orphan Kate alongside Miranda Hart who plays the role of Miss Hannigan.

Shani has started her performances at The Piccadilly Theatre last week and is due to perform in Annie until early next year.

Shani’s Mother Katie Roberts said she is so proud of her daughter.

She said: “I was so excited when I heard that Shani had been cast in Annie. It’s been her dream to perform in the West End for years, and she couldn't have asked for a better show to make her debut.

“At Shani’s first performance I was full of emotions, excitement, nerves and elation. I don't think I can find the words to describe the pride and overwhelming joy I felt watching her perform. She was fantastic, as were the whole cast and production.”

Shani Roberts said: “Every weekend I go to the theatre school and we do singing dancing and acting and I really enjoy it. It helps me prepare to perform in musical theatre productions and builds my confidence too.

“The Annie auditions were really good. I got to meet lots of talented girls. There were about five rounds of auditions over a few of days. It was so exciting!

“I have made some really awesome friends at Annie, we all help each other. It is hard work though, you definitely work up a sweat! We never give up and always try our hardest.

“My teachers are supporting me and are all very proud. My friends want to come and watch me too which is phenomenal!

“In the future, I would like to write my own musical and direct it. Doing some TV work would be cool too. I would also like to be a paramedic. I want to help people. I don't mind blood and I think my personality would be good in an emergency to take the patients mind off it."

Tomorrow’s Talent Principal Gavin Wilkinson congratulated Shani for her achievements.

He added: “Shani has done so well to get a part in this production as there were so many young performers auditioning for very few roles. Shani is an extremely hard-working, positive and professional young performer and deserves every success. We look forward to seeing what she does next – an exciting future ahead! This is testament to the amazing young people we have in the local area working at top levels in the entertainment industry.”
