THE MP for Thurrock joined parishioners from a Tilbury church for a celebration to mark 100 years of the amalgamation of their parish into the Diocese of Brentwood.

The Bishop of Brentwood, Reverend Alan Williams and 11 other priests came together at Our Lady Star of the Sea, Dock Road, Tilbury for the celebration which was also attended by Jackie Doyle-Price MP, mayor of Thurrock, Barbara Rice, and the national director of the Apostleship of the Sea, Martin Foley.

Following the event, a spokesman said: "After the Mass, everyone enjoyed a garden party in the grounds of the presbytery, where the current Parish Priest, Fr Paul Dynan, had organised music and refreshments including a hog roast.

"On a blazing, hot afternoon, welcome shade was provided in a marquee and under the many trees.

"Our own Sisters of Mercy were joined by Sisters who had been at the Tilbury Convent in years gone by.

"A special cake, in the shape of the church which has served this Catholic community since the late nineteenth century, was cut up and distributed to all of those present."
