A ONCE thriving department store that slipped into administration could be transformed into a new ten pin bowling complex, a council has announced.

The ambitions plans propose transforming the old BHS store in the Meadows Shopping Centre into a leisure facility, also equipped with restaurants and a shop.

A design statement submitted to Chelmsford City Council claims the development will increase footfall, helping to revitalise the shopping precinct.

It says: “Given the size and location of the large unit, which fronts onto French's Walk, it is imperative the site be bought back into active use.

"In order to attract the greatest number of tenants some flexibility in the site's uses are now sought in order to attract new tenants to this large vacant trading space.

“This includes a proposed new leisure unit.

“If it is left empty for a long time it will have a negative impact on footfall, and on user perception of the Meadows, which in turn will have a negative impact on the economic success of the centre.”

An artist’s impression of the French’s Walk entrance show a glossy exterior with bold signage, clearly visible from the Friendship Bridge.

The CGI impressions also show how the exterior would look from inside the meadows – a fashion store and restaurants can be seen.

The application goes onto explain how the space, measuring 3243 metres sq across three levels, will be pretty much equally divided between leisure and retail.

If plans are approved, opening times will be 7am-midnight Monday to Saturday and 8am – 11pm Sunday.

It is the first application submitted to the authority following BHS’s closure two months ago, after administrators for the chain were unable to find a new buyer for the business.

Alongside the Chelmsford store, branches closed in Town Square, Basildon, High Street, Southend and Lakeside in West Thurrock.
