THE city’s restaurant scene continues to flourish after two new eateries opened their doors this week.

The Jamaica Blue café began trading alongside hamburger aficionados Byron Burger in Bond Street, employing about 60 staff between them.

Both held opening ceremonies at the beginning of the week, just one day apart, and only two months following the completion of Carluccio's, Turtle Bay, Côte, and steak and lobster restaurant Bourge – aka High Chelmer’s al fresco dining quarter.

The company bosses are confident their restaurants will stand out to punters, despite facing fierce competition.

Hamid Qayyum, Jamaica Blue’s Store Manager, said: “Our menu is diverse and we’re confident it will appeal to a variety of tastes.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be opening the second UK store in Chelmsford and the location is just perfect for us. Being at a riverside location also offers a tranquil environment for our customers.”

Established in Australia in 1989, the chain is now made up of more than 100 venues across Australia, New Zealand, Dubai and China.

Tom Byng founded Byron in 2007, with the first restaurant opening in London’s Kensington High Street. The Chelmsford restaurant is the 67th venue.

Speaking before the launch, Mr Byng said: “We can’t think of a better location than the exciting new development on Bond Street to open a brand new restaurant.

“We’re looking forward to opening the doors this month to welcome people to try our delicious menu.”

Both restaurants have gone for low key interiors, with Byron featuring neon graphics and playful illustrations across the walls, contrasting with the working man’s café feel.

Jamaica Blue will offer fresh, contemporary cuisine and ground coffee garnered from the Blue Mountains of Jamaica.

Byron will serve up a selection of proper, American themed burgers containing four separate cuts of recently ground British beef.
