A NATIONAL judo expert who hails from Chelmsford has been nominated for a national award – for his dedication as a bus driver.

“Inspirational” Michal Kudia, from Chelmsford, who has worked for First Essex for seven years, was nominated in the “Top Bus Driver” category in the UK Bus Awards.

It is known in the industry as the “Bus Oscars” according to First Essex, which boasts three finalists across 20 categories.

Matthew Elsey, also from Chelmsford, has been nominated for Young Manager of the Year.

In a statement, a First Essex spokesman said about Mr Kudia: “He has received many commendations for his outstanding customer service and driving ability and is an inspiration to his colleagues.

“He is the happy smiling face that greets his customers daily and loves his job as a driver. “Outside work, Michal has a string of accolades in the sport of Judo and has represented England in competition.”

He also gave praise to Mr Elsey.

He continued: “Matthew Elsey is a great manager and motivator with excellent leadership qualities.

“His team are engaged and focused and thanks to Matthew's leadership style, together they have confidently and cost effectively managed the stores function in Chelmsford to a very high standard.”

The winners of the UK Bus Awards, who would have gone up against another 250 candidates, are announced at a ceremony in central London on November 23.

The Colchester branch was also nominated for the support it gave to a bus driver and his family, after he suffered life threatening injuries caused by a traffic accident.

Alex Jones, managing director of First Essex, congratulated the team.

He said: “To be nominated as a finalist at the UK bus awards in one category is brilliant, but for three, is exceptional and really exceeded all our expectations. I’m very proud that the talent and commitment of my colleagues.
