AN Essex police officer from Chelmsford who was diagnosed with breast cancer said she’s ‘overwhelmed’ after her colleagues shaved their heads in support of her fight against the disease.

In April, Pc Laura Thomas was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer and made the decision to shave off her hair before receiving treatment.

Immediately after her diagnosis, Laura’s colleagues at Chelmsford Police Station banded together to show their support and stand in solidarity with her.

Sgt Paul Gooding, of the B Shift at Chelmsford Local Policing Team, said: “We had planned a visit to Laura, but decided beforehand that we would shave our heads as well.

“Laura was totally unaware of this, so when we turned up at her address with our new haircuts it made her day.

“We hope this would show her how much she is loved and make sure she knows she doesn’t face this alone.”

Pc Keely Fitch, one of Laura’s close friends, said: “Not only is she an amazing work colleague but also an amazing friend, who is always there for you when needed.

“She is funny, caring and supportive and my life wouldn’t be complete without her in it.

"Laura has been so incredibly brave and dignified since finding out her diagnosis and wants to raise awareness regarding breast cancer.”

Next month, officers will be taking part in the ‘Walk All Over Cancer’ challenge and pledging to walk 10,000 steps a day to raise awareness of the disease.

Pc Fitch has set up a Just Giving page with proceeds going towards Cancer Research.
