ESSEX Police vowed to target drink and drug drivers this month and 75 motorists have already been arrested in the first three weeks of the campaign.

The force’s casualty reduction manager Adam Pipe had previously warned motorists who drove under the influence of drink or drugs that “we will catch you” and that “you will be named and shamed”.

The campaign started on June 1 and will run until June 30 with police, plus fire and ambulance services, determined to highlight how it feels to deal with the terrible consequences of drink and drug driving.

So far, 52 people have been arrested on suspicion of drink driving offences and 23 on suspicion of drug driving offences.

During the first fortnight, 35 people were arrested on suspicion of drink-driving offences and 17 on suspicion of drug offences.

Mr Pipe said that people who are convicted thanks to the campaign will have their details and pictures publicised.

He said: “Drink or drug driving seriously impairs your ability behind the wheel and can have devastating consequences.

“No-one wants to experience how it feels to lose a loved one so I would urge anyone who has any information about a drink or drug driver to contact us.

“I also want to re-iterate that anyone who is arrested during this campaign and is convicted will be named, shamed, and their photo will be put out to the public.”

If you know anyone who is drink or drug driving you are urged to contact Essex Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

Alternatively, call independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or visit www.crimestoppers-uk.org to complete an online form.

The latest initiative aims to build on the Christmas anti-drink and drug driving campaign, and highlight the far-reaching consequences of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs, through the eyes of the emergency services which witness the consequences first-hand.

Between April 2016 and March 2017, 1,024 people were arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in Essex.
