An elderly man sadly died following a house fire in Chelmsford last night.

Neighbours called fire crews to the semi-detached house in Maple Drivem, Chelsmford at around 00.40am this morning.

When firefighters arrived they immediately entered the property and found the living room alight.

An elderly woman, had already been led out of the house by neighbours, but sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was left in the care of the Ambulance Service after breathing in smoke.

A spokesman for Essex Poliec said: "We were called by our colleagues at Essex County Fire & Rescue Service to a fire at an address in Maple Drive, Chelmsford shortly after 12.30am this morning.

"We attended, but, sadly, a man inside was found deceased.

"The death of the man is being treated as unexplained and the cause of the fire is still being investigated."

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but it is not being treated as suspicious. An investigation to find the cause of the fire is underway.
