National Apprenticeship Week in Essex kicked off in Chelmsford at Teledyne e2v, with an event led by Essex County Council to celebrate the county’s apprentices.

Since 2010 there have been 5,350 apprenticeship starts in Chelmsford.

Apprenticeships are key to developing the skilled workforce the country needs. The Government is working with industry to deliver their ambitious target of 3 million new apprenticeship starts by 2020.

Chelmsford MP Vicky Ford said: “I was delighted to meet the apprentices at DST and Chelmsford College recently. Apprenticeships allow people to earn while they learn, and open doors to highly skilled, rewarding careers.

“This Government’s reforms are not only increasing apprenticeship numbers, but also driving up the quality of apprenticeships, meaning they have real value in the jobs market.

“But we have more work to do, to encourage more of our young people, especially girls to take on an apprenticeship in Science, Technology and Engineering.”
