A MAN was left with a fractured cheekbone after being assaulted in the city centre of Chelmsford.

At about 4am on Sunday morning, a 22-year-old male from Bedford was hit during an altercation outside the McDonalds in High Street.

He was taken to Broomfield Hospital by paramedics where he had to undergo surgery to his cheekbone which was fractured.

Officers from Essex Police arrested a 21-year-old man from Brentwood on suspicion of assault.

He has been released on police bail until January 22.

Police have put out an appeal for witnesses in connection with the incident.
