Brentwood School’s orienteers kicked off their new season in style with a solid performance at Sunday’s Epping Forest event organised by the Havering and South Essex Orienteering Club.

Stand-out performances included brother and sister competitors Luke and Stephanie Cooper. Luke, who is in the Lower Sixth, was 4th out of 19 competitors on the Light Green 3.5 km course in a time of 42min 47sec. Second Year Stephanie, was 5th out of 28 entries on the Yellow 2.1 km route and was 1st girl home in a time of 16min 41sec.

In total, Brentwood had 10 orienteers on the Yellow route. Heather Trevelyan was 2nd girl back - just 9 seconds behind Stephanie; Theo Williams was 9th; Sarah Prior 11th and Jessica Mills 13th. Ami Lodhia came home in 15th spot, Jemima Parasram 16th; Freya Killilea 18th; Janie Horton was 22nd and Kate Bowie-Britton 23rd.

On the Orange 3.4 km route, Fifth Year Catriona Kadirkamanathan was 3rd overall - out of 16 entries - and she was also 1st girl home in a time of 50 min 12sec. Third Year Emma-Bowie Britton was 7th overall, and 4th girl, in a time of 57min 21sec.

Third Year Ami Lodhia and First Year Janie Horton were making their team debut and tackled the course really well. Jemima, who is also in the Third year, turned the event into a family affair as her three younger brothers went round the course after her.

Head of Orienteering, Mrs Rachel Barford, said: “Freya overshot one vital turning and therefore took longer than she had hoped but all the pupils took part with enthusiasm and increased confidence. It was a delight to see them.”

The School’s orienteers will be back in action next Sunday when they will be competing at Colchester's Highwoods Country Park.
