Three dogs that were discovered on the loose as Storm Doris hit Essex were rounded up by environmental officers.

Brentwood Borough Council was called after the golden retriever, black spaniel and labrador were spotted running free around Doddinghurst yesterday. It is thought they may have escaped due to damage caused to fences or gates during the storm.

The three pooches were found to be chipped and taken to Wallace Kennels.

Council officers spent the day dealing with Doris damage, including removing a tree in Orchard Avenue and a dead conifer in Myrtle Road. A privately-owned tree that had come down in Warley Road was inspected by officers and dealt with by Essex County Council Highways.

Fencing has been damaged in Oaktree Close and officers were able to advise residents to move vehicles that might face damage from storm debris.

Chair for Environment & Housing Councillor Chris Hossack said: “We are always prepared for emergencies and had fair warning of Storm Doris but nevertheless officers have been kept very busy inspecting and assessing the situation on the spot around the borough.

"As a result effective work has been undertaken as necessary to ensure safety is paramount and problematic areas kept clear."
