TWO police officers have helped save a man who was threatening to jump off a bridge above the A12 in Brentwood.

Pc Andy Bullock from Brentwood local policing team had been tutoring Pc Lucy Lumbard for just five weeks when they noticed a man in distress on a bridge close to Wigley Bush Lane at around 4pm on Thursday, May 18.

The officers ran onto the bridge and started to talk to man, who suddenly walked up to the railings and threatened to jump.

Andy and Lucy grabbed the man, pulled him to the ground and managed to calm him down.

Pc Bullock said: “The young man was soaking wet and did not speak to us very much, but Lucy was fantastic with the way that she dealt with him and showed him care and compassion, whilst trying to obtain any details that she could from him.

“She built a good rapport with the man and this inevitably helped us to conclude the incident in the simplest of means, by having him voluntarily admit himself to hospital.

“I would expect any officer to deal with this kind of incident in the same way, however, having only been on patrol for five weeks I was very impressed with the way that she got stuck in and helped save this man’s life.”
