Liverpool Street Station in London is reported to have been evacuated and was on lockdown after a suspicious package was spotted.

A cordon was put in place and some roads were closed while the package was inspected.

Armed police officers and sniffer dogs were seen patrolling parts of the city while the cordon was in place in the Liverpool Street and Moorgate areas of London.

Witnesses reported no disruption to trains but people were told not to leave buildings.

Police said the item was later found to be non-suspicious and the cordons were lifted.

The operation came as British security services remain on high alert following an attempted bombing on a London Tube train last week.

The national terror threat level was raised to "critical" after the blast, which injured 30 people, but has since returned to "severe", meaning further attacks are considered highly likely.

This station is on the main line for Greater Anglia trains coming into Essex.
