If Leena Patel could compare herself to anyone it would be Monica from Friends. “I am one of those people who is into planning and organising. I am a bit like Monica – sometimes I shock myself and it can be a bit scary,” Leena laughs.

The conference and events executive at Marks Tey Hotel is passionate about her job, changing career recently from a seven- year stint in the City in campaigns and marketing.

Having always wanted to become involved in the events industry, Leena thought enough was enough and gave up the commute. She now lives down the road from her job in Colchester and follows a career she knew she would enjoy.

She says: “I did a course in wedding planning and events and that inspired me to go on to do this.”

As well as an easier journey to work, Leena spends her days organising a wide range of events for clients, from business conferences to weddings.

Working with a team of colleagues she can sometimes deal with about six events a day and often has to split her time between clients to ensure they have everything they need. Leena explains: “I have to make sure people have everything they need and rectify any hiccups. At the same time, someone may come in enquiring about holding a wedding with us.

“I enjoy talking to people and making them happy, it’s the fun part of my job. Each day is different and dynamic. There is also a lot of attention to detail.”

It can be a very busy job and when things go wrong, it is important to stay calm. Leena says anyone interested in working in the events industry must be prepared to be hands on and, it goes without saying, be very organised.
