Burglars posing as tree surgeons distracted an elderly resident and stole items from his house.

The 85-year-old victim arranged for work to be carried out at his home in Shenfield Place, Brentwood, on Wednesday, August 8 between 11.30am and 2pm.

He spoke to one of the suspects in his garden at some point during those times.

After the men left, the victim found a safe and a strong box containing valuables and items of sentimental value were missing from his home.

These included photos, personal letters and documents and war medals belonging to the victim’s late father.

It is believed up to three other suspects posing as workmen had entered the house while he was outside.

They were all described as wearing blue and purple polo shirts and were driving a Ford Transit van with an open back and wood panelling on the sides. It was towing a wood chipper.

The safe and strong box were found empty close to the junction where the A127 meets the A128 towards Bulphan and Grays.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Jo Barnes said: “The suspects made a number of visits to the property to speak to the owner between 11.30am and 2pm.

“This a particularly callous crime, preying on a vulnerable victim, and stealing items of such sentimental value.

“I am keen to speak to anyone who saw these men, or the vehicle, in the area at the time, or saw it in the area where the safe and strong box were later found.

“I also urge residents to please be vigilant and contact us if they see anyone acting suspiciously.”

Most people who call at your home will be genuine but it’s important to be on your guard and remember there are bogus callers about.

Always check the caller is who they say they are before letting them in and remember not to leave doors open and unattended.
