THE mother of a man who was left paralysed following two car crashes is calling for more help to be made available to her son in the UK.

Brookin Johnson, who has been paralysed from the chest down for the past two years, has just returned home from undergoing treatment at a resort in Thailand.

But the 32-year-old, from Gosfield, was not able to receive stem cell treatment as planned due to an infection caused by cuts to his toes, feet and knees from exercising in the pool.

However, mum Jackie Rainbird says they are hoping stem cell treatment will be possible at the start of next year.

She said: “We’ve had enormous encouragement from the doctor at Thanyapura and various alternative treatments that have helped him.

“We also now know that he can do this journey again and that stem cell treatment is imminent.”

Jackie says they hope to make progress on having metal implants removed to stop them causing violent reactions. She said: “We’re still struggling for help and understanding from consultant surgeons and spinal surgeons to remove it.

“Surgical removal is needed urgently if Brookin’s conditions are to improve. Our next step is convincing consultants and doctors that he should be receiving treatment in the UK.

“Brookin is capable of more with the right professional care and treatment plan and, we have proved that this month.

“It is bittersweet we had to take him to another country to receive even the basic treatment we really needed to happen here in the UK.

“More support is needed from our own health authorities that we have struggled and battled with and who have let him down and watched his suffering.

“All said, we owe a huge thanks for the relentless support we receive from his GP, his matron, Provide Care, his new occupational therapist and countless ambulance crews for the greatest support throughout traumatic episodes.”
