Animal Noise + Superglu, New Years Eve Party plus DJ set from Miss Scarlett

Colchester Arts Centre, Church Street, Colchester, doors 9pm, finishes 2am. £15. 01206 500900.

Having conquered national radio airwaves, and several of the country’s most prestigious music festivals, Superglu will be seeing out the year in style with their infectious indie punk rock numbers. Loosely based in Manningtree and its picturesque surrounding areas, the band consists of brothers Ben and Alex Brown alongside bass player Krista Lynch and drummer Ben Ward.

Headlining the night will be Colchester’s mighty Animal Noise, who in recent years have gone stratospheric, getting Radio 1 airplay, bagging a week on their Official playlist, and performing at such events as Hyde Park in London, T in the Park and Bestival.

Rounding off the night will be a DJ Set from Miss Scarlet, with dancing going on until the early hours.

Harwich New Year fireworks

A blaze of colour will light up the night sky as Harwich launches its annual New Year fireworks spectacular.

The New Year’s Eve extravaganza, off Harwich Quay, attracts thousands of spectators from across Essex every year.

Every year, a committee of organisers raises thousands of pounds to put towards the display.

Organisers rely on donations from businesses, Harwich Town Council and residents to ensure the dazzling event continues.

Andrew Tannock, chairman of the organising committee, said: “It’s getting more popular all the time – every year we have more people coming.

“The headache we have is fundraising.

“It costs us about £9,500 every year including the cost of insurances.

“We put about £7,500 up in the air.”

Volunteers will be at Harwich Quay on the night with buckets to collect donations.

Organisers are asking spectators to give what they can to help keep the annual event running every year.

Once again, Trinity House has kindly given its permission for the organisers to use its pier as its “firing base.”

The Harwich Haven Authority will also allow use of the Ha’penny Pier.

Fireworks will rocket into the sky at midnight.
