AN independent retailer in Leigh will close up shop after 35 successful years.

LPC Stationers will be relocating from its home in Elm Road, Leigh, to Eastwood, where customers will be able to park for free, on May 25 this year.

Mark Davis, who was 20 when first opening the store, said he is “immensely proud” of his tenure and will be passing the baton to his brother Andrew Davis as he steps down to take semi-retirement.

Mr Davis said he made the decision three years ago that when his lease ran out in July this year he would not renew it, saying the long term future of the business, which sells office, stationary, arts and crafts supplies, will be online.

He said: “We have been trading in Leigh for over 35 years, in three different shops in Elm Road. I am immensely proud of this amazing achievement of running a successful, changing and ever growing business for so many years.

“I was just 20 when I opened my first shop, with help from my parents who I indebted to. Having started my retail experience at the tender age of 11 working in my parents’ post office as a Saturday boy.

“Our full printing, copying services will transfer and continue along with the online side.

“A trade counter will operate for your office supplies, with a small retail side.

“Our internet sales continue to increase year on year.

“The decision has been fuelled by my late father being diagnosed with Dementia. No blame whatsoever is laid on our landlord or even the business rates.

“These expenses would not be a problem if the high street had a future and was better supported.”

Mr Davis warned the future of the high street in the UK has a “very limited shelf life” and that retailers “cannot survive on scraps”, saying the high streets are now more like “convenience streets”.

He added: “In 1983 when LPC opened in Leigh, it was a typical traditional town with an excellent selection of thriving independent retailers. The balance has changed dramatically over the last few years and there is very few traditional retailers left.

“When the competition was just the high street, independents could complete with the multiples. It is impossible to maintain a bricks and mortar shop and charge online prices instore.

“We hope our customers will continue to support us in Leigh and in the new location.

“LPC will continue to trade as normal, with many special closing down offers over the next few months. To our many customers who have supported us over the 35 years, a massive thank you.

“I shall miss the camaraderie, banter, and the friendship with customers and fellow traders. We hope to see you at the new location.”
