PLANS have been unveiled for a brand new 146-room aparthotel on one of the most famous streets in York.

The hotel company Staycity is proposing to build a new hotel on Micklegate, called WildeAparthotels.

The build will seek to replace the existing buildings that currently house the Jinnah restaurant, Minster Car Hire Garage and The Micklegate at 127 bar.

The 35 million pound development will include 146 rooms, with each apartment featuring the latest intelligent in-room technology including a 43 inch flat screen smart TV and touch control panels for lighting and air conditioning. Luxury features will also include an extra large bed, and a rainfall shower.

There will also be studios and one-bed apartments to business and leisure travellers with the benefit of 24-hour reception along with well-appointed kitchenettes in each individually-designed room.

The hotel, which is being developed by North Star Investment Management, will be based around the theme of the Irish bon viveur Oscar Wilde,

A spokesman for North Star Investment Management said that a planning application has been submitted to City of York Council and a decision is expected later this year.

Staycity’s group development director Barry Hickey said that York was an deal spot for the Aparthotel brand.

He said: “York has already been a fantastic location for our Staycity Aparthotel brand and we are excited about the prospect of bringing our design-led brand Wilde to this impressive and popular city.”

A spokesperson for North Star Investment Management said: “Attracting the Wilde brand to York is a vote of confidence in the city.

“This development will regenerate a key gateway site continuing the great improvement the street and area has undergone in recent years and acting as an economic boost to other local businesses too.”

Staycity first launched its Wilde Aparthotels in London West last April and intends to roll out the hotel chain across city centre locations throughout Europe, with initial sites in Edinburgh, Manchester, Berlin and York.

The company opened its first property in York in July 2016 on an unused site in Paragon Street.

Since opening the 197-apartment premises has proved popular with both tourists visiting York and business guests working in the area.

A public exhibition to explain the building plans will be held this Wednesday at the York Baptist Church on Priory Street.

Members of the public are welcome to attend from from 3pm to 7pm where they can meet members of the development team, who will be on hand to answer questions from local residents and businesses.
