PRIMARY pupils came up with an alternative way to celebrate World Book Day.

Students and staff at Elm Hall Primary School in Witham spent the day making their favourite factional characters out of recycled materials.

The concept saw youngsters conduct their own research before using their imagination to create their chosen character.

The creations were then showed off throughout the day as the children and staff got to look at the best on offer.

A spokesman for the school said: "This activity has got children engaged, recycling, talking about their characters and sharing stories about the books where their characters can be found.

"We use renaissance reading scheme here at Elm Hall and celebrate our reading millionaires so World Book Day is a big part of our schools focus on reading.

"The school is also mindful that purchasing costumes is quite expensive, and not everyone can make a costume. Taking on board our parents comments and to alleviate pressure we found an amazing alternative.

"This project has got families working together causing much excitement and anticipation. It has been a pleasure to see parent/Carers working together with the children to be a part of such a great day, continuing the schools community spirit."
