A FORMER military engineer has been handed a restraining order after admitting assaulting a man.

Richard Young, 57, of Holst Avenue, Laindon, appeared at Basildon Magistrates’ Court where he admitted one count of assault and one count of committing an offence while subject to a conditional discharge.

At the hearing, on April 11, he was handed a one year restraining order which bans him from contacting the victim due to a long-standing history of harassment.

Young was also fined £80 and ordered to pay £115 in costs and a victim surcharge.

The 57-year-old, who had previously been sleeping rough, was previously in the spotlight after Billericay FC owner Glenn Tamplin attempted to help him turn his life on the streets by offering him a job at the club.

In October 2017, the Echo spoke to Richard about the opportunity after Mr Tamplin approached him on the street.

Unfortunately, Mr Tamplin claimed only weeks later that Richard, who said he suffered with an alcohol problem, had ransacked the club and disappeared with a number of items bringing the assistance to an end.
