A survey of more than 4,000 patients across almost 40 surgeries who responded to a questionnaire, found 80 per cent rated their surgery as fairly good or good. The national average is 83 per cent.

Some 8 per cent rated theirs as poor. The national average is 6 per cent.

The lowest-performing surgery Dr M Asalam's Practice, in Pitsea, where 62 per cent of patients said the surgery was 'good'.

The best-performing is The Highwood Surgery, in Brentwood, where 100 per cent of patients said the surgery was 'good'.

As well as giving an overall rating, patients were also asked how easy it is to get in touch with their surgery on the phone.

Set against a national average of 68 per cent, just 62 per cent of Basildon and Brentwood patients said it was 'easy' to get through, with 38 per cent saying it was 'not easy', set against a national average of 32 per cent.
