DOZENS of people across Essex are waiting for a lifesaving transplant...but there is hope that wait could get shorter.

From next year, the law will change and all adults in the UK will be considered to have consented to organ donation unless they have recorded otherwise.

In 2018, 156 people in Essex had their lives saved by a transplant operation but 125 people in the county remain on the waiting list.

For many the wait will be a long one and sadly they may never live to benefit from an organ donation.

The upcoming change in the law should encourage us to talk about organ donation and share our wishes with loved ones who can still have the final say.

There can be no greater gift than life.

Today little Isabella-Faith Wragg will start school but for her parents her ongoing wait for a donor never leaves their thoughts.

They are 16 months into the two years doctors originally told them they have to find a donor.

They hope sharing her story and raising awareness of Organ Donation Week will inspire others to talk about it.

Our bodies and organs are indiscriminate as to when they might fail us.

We do not know when it may be us or a loved one who needs a lifesaving transplant.

Talking about death and what will happen to our bodies when we are gone is often considered a taboo subject.

But we should all consider it - and what we can potentially do to prolong another person’s life.
