A DOZEN public phone boxes could be removed from the streets under proposals put forward by BT.
The telecommunication giant is consulting with councils throughout the Braintree district over the plans which have been put forward due to a severe drop is usage in the last decade.
BT says the use of its public phone boxes across the country has decreased by 90 per cent in the last 10 years, while Ofcom says 20 per cent of phones haven’t been used at all in the last 12 months.
There are three phone boxes in both Braintree and Witham respectively which could be removed under the proposals, as well as in Feering, Kelvedon, Gosfield, Coggeshall, Sudbury and Bulmer.
Braintree Council’s cabinet bosses will discuss the consultation and proposals during a meeting on Monday.
The meeting gets under way at 7.15pm at Causeway House.
