A CHARITY football match in memory of two popular young-men raised more than £2,000 for charity.

Team RCT vs Team LP3 took place at Wivenhoe Town Football Club in honour of Robin Freeman and Lee Pennycuick.

Friends of both men took to the field in a bid to raise money for the Robin Cancer Trust, a germ cell cancer awareness charity set up in Mr Freeman's honour after his death at the age of 24.

Mr Pennycuik died in 2016 at the age of 31.

Both men were big footie fans and had played against each other for opposing teams during their amateur careers.

Chris Morgan who was good friends with Mr Pennycuik and is now a trustee of the Robin Cancer Trust.

He captained Team LP3 and helped organise the event.

"Thank you all for putting your hands in your pockets, nobody made you, that's what makes it even better," Mr Morgan said.

"This was bigger than raising money though, this was two huge groups of families and friends coming together as one to show their respects to two of their loved ones.

"It was nothing but a pleasure to play against Team RCT, every player that stepped on that pitch did it because they lost somebody they loved and respected and acted like true gents.

"In my eyes the money nor the result really matter to me, it's more about remembering what's important in life and that is your friends and your family and you should always make time for them."

The Robin Cancer Trust is the UK's only germ cell cancer awareness charity.

The £2,100 raised will be used so the charity can continue its work on increasing the knowledge around testicular and ovarian forms of the condition.
