Police were forced to close part of the A12 after a car burst into flames.

The southbound carriageway was shut to all traffic near to junction 24 at Kelvedon just before 10.30am this morning to allow firefighters to tackle the blaze.

Drivers were warned the road could be closed for several hours but PC Nathan Bright has since revealed the incident has been dealt with and the road has reopened.

He wrote on Twitter: "Essex Fire and Rescue have done a sterling job and the A12 is fully running again.

"There will be some delay to your journey but thank you for your patience whilst the incident has been dealt with."

The road closure saw queues form as far back as junction 25 at Marks Tey.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "Firefighters were called to a vehicle fire on the A12 just after 10:30am this morning.

“On arrival, crews reported that a vehicle was on fire in a layby and worked to extinguish the fire by 11:13am.

“The cause of the fire was accidental.”
