STAFF working on an industrial estate have reported stepping in human faeces on the pavement.

Brunel Way on Severalls Industrial Estate in Colchester is used regularly by lorry drivers.

Last week on two occasions human faeces was spotted on the public footpath, with the same problem happening on other roads within the business park.

Gerard Oxford, ward councillor for the area, asked Colchester Council zone wardens to clear the mess.

He said: “As the park is privately owned it is not the council’s role to do that. But we do it for public health and safety.

“The council knows who the management company are and is in touch with them.”

He said one of the main issues is getting the identities of the culprits.

He added: “It appears the drivers of HGVs are the culprits, we need to try and identify the registration plates of the vehicles and what companies they are delivering from so we can contact them.

“It would be nice to be able to provide another option.”

Anne Turrell, Essex County Councillor for the area, said it was an Environmental Health issue.

She said: “It’s disgusting. There are a lot of businesses around there, they can go and knock on their doors to see if they can use the toilets there.”

The same issue occurred in 2017 when Colchester Council street wardens visited the road to clean up piles of excrement and soiled clothes.

A Colchester Council spokesperson said: “Our Neighbourhood Wardens regularly patrol the area, dealing with waste and other issues they find or which have been reported – but ultimately the responsibility lies with the management company.

“We take seriously any waste issues which negatively impact on residents’ enjoyment of streets and open spaces,

and which could endanger public health or the environment.

“This is to the extent that, if sufficient evidence emerges to prosecute those who fail to properly dispose of their waste, we will not hesitate to do so.”
