THE family of an elderly man who died following a collision have paid tribute to him.

James Terrance Hewitt was struck by a Ford Fiesta on Front Street, in Chester-le-Street shortly after 8.30am on Tuesday, December 3.

The 91-year-old, who lives in the town was attempting to cross the road when the collision happened.

He was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious head injuries, but died a few days later.

In a statement, his family said: “It is with deepest sympathy that we announce the death of our father, James Terrance Hewitt, known to many as Terry, who was involved in a tragic collision in Chester-le-Street.

“He was a much-loved father and grandfather and will be sadly missed.

“We wish to thank everyone for their support and ask to be left so that we can grieve in peace.”

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision remains ongoing.
