A NEW zebra crossing is set to be installed on a busy road in Colchester.

Essex County Council is consulting on plans to create the crossing in Goojerat Road, nears its junction with Kensington Road.

County Hall says the zebra crossing will increase safety for pedestrians, particularly residents and workers from the assisted living accommodation and commercial units being built nearby.

A report states: "This development will bring with it an increase of vehicular and pedestrian foot traffic, particularly those of road users deemed more vulnerable as a result of the elderly residential units.

"It is therefore recommended to install a zebra crossing on Goojerat Road, which will provide a dedicated crossing point for the new elderly residents in addition to linking pedestrians between many of the existing residential areas surrounding the site."

A consultation exploring the plans runs until February 21.
