ELVIS Bwomono scored his first ever header to secure Southend United a last-gasp 2-1 win against Lincoln City.

The 21-year-old nodded home a left wing corner from Stephen McLaughlin six minutes into stoppage time to help Blues bag their first home win of the season.

And Bwomono was lost for words after seeing the ball hit the back of the net.

“Words cannot really describe how it felt and how I’m feeling but it was obviously a special moment,” said the defender.

“If training doesn’t count then I’ve never scored a header before and it was also the first time I’ve been up for a corner all season.

“But I’m pleased and relieved that we’ve finally won and that I’ve contributed for the winning goal.”

Bwomono’s goal came after Harry Anderson had scored an 89th minute equaliser for Lincoln.

But the youngster always felt Blues would get another chance.

“It seemed to be the story of our season again,” said Bwomono.

“We can do well and hold leads but eventually we concede.

“But I just knew we would get another chance and I said that to the boys.

“We kept going and we got the goal.”

And, despite the second from bottom Shrimpers still being 12 points from safety, Bwomono also felt it was an important victory.

“It’s massive and it shows the fans we’re still trying really hard,” said Bwomono.

“There are still games to play and none of the boys are backing off it.

“We have to do this every week now too.

“We can’t take our foot off the pedal and we have to keep this going, starting at Blackpool on Saturday.”

Bwomono could again line-up at centre-back against the Seasiders.

But the defender is enjoying his new role.

“I feel like I adapted well and I feel comfortable anywhere in the defence really,” said Bwomono.

“Going forward, I don’t mind doing it for the team if needed and it’s not really a problem.”

However, Bwomono remains determined to give the Shrimpers supporters plenty to cheer.

“The fans are fantastic,” said Bwomono.

“They’ve stayed with us through the bad times and they’re a driving force for us.

“When we know we have the fans backing we know we can perform like that.

“But we need to replicate what we did last season and in this performance to make sure we can get wins, see games out and be on the front foot.”
