A MAN was threatened by two teenagers with an “eight inch kitchen knife” in broad daylight.

After sheltering in a phone box from the wind whilst on the phone to a friend, two teenagers, believed to be around 17-years-old, began taunting the victim by kicking the phone box, in Ballards Walk, Basildon.

After the victim himself was kicked by one of the pair, they fled, only to return five minutes later with a knife.

The man, who took to social media shortly after his experience to warn others of the ordeal, told how he had only a bread crate for protection, which he held between himself and the knife-wielding youngsters.

Witnesses also reported watching the man being chased round a car by the pair.

David Harrison, chairman of Basildon Council’s neighbours hoods and public spaces committee, said: “This is a pretty horrendous incident and is a sad reflection of some areas of society.

“The major of people can walk safely around the borough.

“I hope these people are caught and dealt with quickly and swiftly.

“It acts as a deterrent against similar incidents if this is the case.

“I hope witnesses can come forward and help police catch and deal with these people.”

Officers are urging people with information to come forward quickly.

A spokesperson from Essex Police said: “We received reports that a man had been threatened with a knife in Ballards Walk, Basildon on Saturday, February 1, at around 2.40pm.

“Our enquires are ongoing.”
