MARK Oxley insists Southend United must learn quickly as they bid to build on their win against Lincoln City.

The Shrimpers head to Blackpool this weekend looking to secure back-to-back victories for the first time since October 2018.

But the Blues shot-stopper is not getting carried by Saturday’s success against the Imps.

“We’re not stupid and we’re not getting ahead of ourselves,” said Oxley.

“It was a great win but it was our first win at home and it’s not good enough still.

“We’ve got to learn quickly that it is what it is.

“It’s pointless going on about it if we go and get beaten at Blackpool this weekend.

“We have to be as consistent as we can and get as many points as we can to see where that takes us.”

The Shrimpers’ 2-1 win against Lincoln City at Roots Hall was their third success of the season and Sol Campbell’s side remain second from bottom in the League One standings, 12 points from safety.

But Oxley feels Blues are now getting to grips with their situation.

“We know what the situation is and there’s been a lot going off at the club that we’ve had to deal with,” said Oxley.

“Fair enough the performances might not have been there on the pitch but it’s come to a head now really and the lads have knocked it on the head and just said it is what it is and we have to get on with it.

“Maybe we should have done that earlier, who knows.

“But as professional footballers you’ve just got to go out there and keep doing your best.”

With a number of players moving on during the January transfer window, Blues relied on a number of young players against Lincoln.

And Oxley was impressed by how they performed.

“They’ve not just come in and started playing last week,” said the 29-year-old.

“The likes of Tom (Clifford) are a credit to themselves.

“They’ve been here god knows how many years and no-one would have known it was his first start if you hadn’t been told.

“They all came in and were a credit to the club and their families so fair play to them.”

But Oxley now wants more of the same at Bloomfield Road.

“We need to be consistent,” said Oxley.

“We’re a young group and we have to keep learning and quickly because the games are coming thick and fast in the next month or so. We have to have a strong mentality and get on with it.”
