A DRIVE-IN cinema will return to Colchester next month as a firm brings socially distanced flicks to town.

Nightflix, based on the former Sainsbury’s site in Stanway, was forced to close when Covid-19 swept across the country.

It will be reopening from July 1 offering an initial 16 day schedule of films.

Filmlovers will be able to enjoy hit movies such as First World War drama 1917, La La Land, Rocketman and The Joker.

Social distancing measures mean only a limited amount of tickets are available to keep staff and guests safe.

All staff will wear personal protective equipment and a new food ordering system will allow customers to get snacks on site.

Steve Marson, from the Nightflix, said “We are delighted to be in a position where we can offer a safe form of entertainment to the public whilst practicing social distancing.

“It goes without saying the main focus is the safety and wellbeing of our staff and guests.

“The people of Essex have been patient during lockdown and we hope our cinema will offer something different and exciting after what has been a very dull period for us all.

“We have made a whole host of changes to keep people safe and entertained.

“The new menu we have on offer really sets us apart from what you would call “standard cinema food”

“We have announced an initial 16-day film schedule, and we hope to bring Hollywood’s newly-released movies after this period.”

In March, Nightflix’s plans to use the site for two years were thrown out by Colchester Council.

Mr Marson said they had now re-submitted the application.

He added: “On the back of all the changes we have made, we have re-submitted a planning application to stay in Colchester for some time.

“We are working closely with the council on this matter.”
