A FIRE ripped through a five-acre field.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS) crews arrived at the scene off Hoe Court in Lancing to find the open area well alight.

The service was called at about 2pm and the significant blaze prompted a huge response with with teams from Lancing, Littlehampton, Worthing, Storrington and Chichester all attending.

People were urged to avoid the area as firefighters tackled the flames.

Hoses and beaters were used to extinguish the fire, with crews leaving the scene at 3.02pm.

This was not the only large blaze WSFRS crews were called to today.

At about 5pm, a retired London Fire Brigade team member discovered flames leaping from a power substation off Forest Road in Horsham.

Crews were able to put the fire out using extinguishers before leaving the scene.
