A man was left unconscious after he was attacked from behind by two men near a taxi rank.
The man, in his 50s, was hit round the head as he walked to a taxi rank on Eastwood Road in Rayleigh.
The attack, on August 1, near the junction with High Road, saw the victim fall to the floor, hitting his head on metal railings as he fell.
Police say the men left before returning a short time later as the victim was getting into a taxi.
The man was then threatened.
The force has now launched an investigation.

One of the men is described as being in his early-to-mid 20s, white, around six feet tall, muscular with dark hair and wearing a tight black t-shirt.
The second man is also described as being in his early-to-mid 20s, white, around six feet tall and muscular but with fair hair.
He is also believed to have been wearing a tight black t-shirt.
A spokesman for Essex Police, said: "They were both last seen near to a war monument outside Clinton Cards on Rayleigh High Street.
"If you saw anything, have any CCTV or dash cam footage, or have any other information please call us on 101 quoting the crime reference number 42/116427/20 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
