HEARTFELT tributes have been paid to a former sporting coach and fundraising hero, dubbed Canvey’s very own Captain Tom.

George Beecham, 89 of Canvey died peacefully at home on Monday morning.

He helped train Commonwealth gold medal winner Dean Macey who is also from the island, as well as being one of the founders of the Canvey Athletics Club.

He also raised thousands of pounds for the RNLI and ran at least 14 London Marathons. The sporty fundraiser also campaigned for better facilities for islanders.

In 2014 he joined calls to revitalise the rundown track behind Waterside Farm Leisure Centre, in Somnes Avenue, Canvey.

Paying tributes to him his wife Marlene, 87, said: “He was very kind hearted and generous and had time for everyone.

“He was very interested in the RNLI and nautical history and also loved his gardening.

“It means a lot to us that so many people have so many nice things to say and were so grateful for George’s help. It was great for George to see Dean Macey do so well and he also worked with runner Jessica Judd.

“He also took part in more than 14 London Marathons and was a very fit man.”

Councillors and community leaders also paid tribute to Mr Beecham who was a community stalwart.

Ray Howard MBE former Canvey councillor said: “He was such a grand man and goes back years on Canvey. He worked tirelessly for charity and especially the RNLI and people used to give so generously.

“He was a real community-minded man and we’ve lost a very special person.”

Dave Blackwell, Canvey Independent councillors said: “George became a dear friend to me and was someone you could always sit and enjoy a good chat with.

“He was unbelievably fit and did the marathons and used to walk across Europe.

“I think most people will know him for collecting for the RNLI and I know the charity will miss him, he was a real community stalwart.

“He was one of life’s real characters and is Canvey’s answer to Captain Tom, we will all miss him.”
