A new radio station has gone live with the help of a legendary broadcaster.

Caroline Community Radio 94.7 went live for the first time this morning (Monday, October 19) across the Maldon district.

The station promises a 24-mix of music and community programming.

The new station is getting a hand from former pirate radio station Radio Caroline, which changed the face of broadcasting when it came on the scene in 1964, broadcasting pop music from a radio ship off the Essex coast.

DJs Ray Clark, Johnny Lewis, Graham Bannerman and Peter Philips, who between them have more than 100 years broadcasting experience will be presenting the programme during the daytime.

The team will also be helping to train volunteers interested in behind the scenes.

Ray said: “We invite anyone who lives or works in the Maldon district with an interest in broadcasting, who would like the chance to learn the relevant skills and join our broadcast team.

“We asked people to get in touch with us if they were interested in getting involved with Caroline people involved both on air and behind the scenes, who have a genuine interest in broadcasting.

"We are keen to encourage new talent and we have found some."

Local community programme presenters include Owen Ward, Lucien and Kev, Josh Holmes-Bright, Kevin Briggs, Ian Crisp, Michael A, and Laura Tuckey, daughter of rock star Suzi Quatro
