It has been a busy and crazy year at Maldon District Council, so we have taken a closer look at what has happened.

Another counillor is set to face the councils joint standards committee on Tuesday (October 27) after complaints were launched.

However no details have been given as to who the councillor is or what the complaints are about.

The press and public will both be excluded from the meeting.

But this isn't the only instance this year where councillors have been investigated.

Adrian Fluker

The biggest controversy surrounded former council leader councillor Adrian Fluker who was found to have breached the councillors code of conduct.

An independent investigation was launched after complaints were made against him for making a 'throat-slit gesture' and saying 'Hello Sailor' to fellow councillor Richard Siddall.

In his official complaint, Mr Siddall said that Mr Fluker had subjected him to bullying, intimidation and homophobic behaviour over a sustained period.

Mr Fluker stood down as council leader after four years on the leadership team.

Councillors later voted to suspend Mr Fluker from sitting on council committees and working parties for 12 months.

Following the sanctions, Councillor Siddall resigned from the conservative party.

He has now joined the Indepedent Group.

New Leaders

Councillor Elaine Bamford was elected as interim leader of Maldon District Council.

Speaking afterwards she said she wanted to put 'blame culture' behind the council.

She said: ""I want to go forward positively and proactively on behalf of the community we serve, and put behind us the complaint and blame culture that has been so damaging in the press.”

Councillor Wendy Stamp was also recently elected as the leader of the Independent Group.

Councillor Stephen Nunn was also elected as deputy leader.

Key positions in the council are set to be decided at the statutory annual meeting on November 5, including council leader and membership of committees.

Who has majority?

The political balance has now shifted away from the Conservative following a number of resignations

Former deputy leader Councillor Maddie Thompson resigned from the conservative group giving the Indepedent the majority.

Currently the Independent group have the majority with 13 councillors.

The Conservative group have nine and there are also eight non-aligned councillors.
