A MUM will fly to America for the first stage of her life-saving cancer treatment after generous fundraisers donated more than £28,000 to her family’s appeal.

Mother-of-four Lyndsay Johnson, 38, was told she could have months to live after being diagnosed with smarca4 deficient thoracic sarcoma in July.

She has been receiving palliative treatment at Colchester Hospital, but doctors are not sure how her body will respond as the cancer is so rarely seen in Britain.

But thanks to a fundraising campaign led by her family, travel consultant Lyndsay will receive specialist treatment at the MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Texas next month, jetting out for an initial assessment.

Her family have so far raised more than £28,000 but know they will need to raise tens of thousands to pay the final bill.

Becky Carter, Lyndsay’s sister, said: “We set up the fundraising page on Facebook at the end of September and we have raised £8,097 through that and we have put on 16 events in the last two months.

“We have also had more than £20,000 donated through our Go Fund Me page.

“The support from businesses, family and friends has been amazing.”

Lyndsay, who lives near Abbey Fields, Colchester, has just finished four chemotherapy treatments and is receiving immunotherapy treatment.

She will travel to Texas next month for about ten days so doctors can create a bespoke treatment plan for her.

Becky, who also lives in Colchester, said: “It was a nightmare to get her over there because of Covid and we had to apply through the US Embassy to get her an exception on medical grounds.

“We would not have been able to do it without the support of everyone. She is definitely feeling more hopeful now and is so grateful for all the support she has received.”

The family do not yet know how much Lyndsay’s treatment will cost and so haven’t slowed down the fundraising efforts just yet.

Becky said: “The doctors will produce a treatment plan and hopefully we will know by the time she comes back.

“We are heading in the right direction now and hopefully it will continue that way.”
